That's São Pedro de Alcântara. Cycling around here is more than just enjoying nature — it's getting to know the history of a welcoming people who are proud of their origins. Today we're going to tell you all about our roots and what makes us so unique. Shall we go?

A little piece full of history

São Pedro de Alcântara is located about 40 km from Florianópolis and has less than 6,000 residents. We were the first German colony in Santa Catarina, founded in 1829. Most of those who live here today are direct descendants of the first immigrants who arrived with faith, hope and the desire to build a new life.

As we cycled along the circuit, we realized how much this history is alive: in the old houses, in the customs, in the accents and, of course, in the churches. Many residents know each other by name, have lived on the same land for generations and welcome you with that smile of someone who is proud to tell you about their origins. It's a community atmosphere that makes you feel at home.

The Main Church: starting and finishing point

As soon as you arrive, you will see the beautiful Igreja Matriz de São Pedro de Alcântara. It is located on top of a hill, overlooking the city center, and it is right there, in section 1 of the cycling circuit, that it appears to welcome you with open arms. The Matriz marks the beginning and end of the route, since the circuit is circular, and sets the tone for what lies ahead: a trip full of charm, memories and a lot of identity.

The building is beautiful, with a wooden altar and an imposing dome. It was inaugurated in 1929, during the celebrations of the colony's 100th anniversary, and to this day it houses sacred images that tell a lot about the faith of the Alcantara community.

While cycling, it is worth taking a break there. In addition to admiring the architecture and the view, you can also visit the courtyard where the city's former priests are buried. If the day is nice, the sunset hitting the façade makes for unforgettable photos.

Faith that moves the city

Religion has always been a part of the lives of the people of Alcantara. More than just beautiful buildings, it is present in people's daily lives and in traditional events that liven up the city. The Patron Saint's Festival, for example, takes place in October and is one of the most important moments of the year.

During this festival, the city is decorated, masses, processions and a delicious community lunch with typical foods take place. If you are cycling around the circuit at this time, you can include this experience in your itinerary: it is a perfect mix of faith, culture and coexistence.

Culture that is lived on the street

The culture of São Pedro de Alcântara is rich and can be found everywhere. After getting to know the religious side, you can also experience lively moments such as the Stammtisch, an event of German origin that is the symbol of the city.

During the Stammtisch, which usually takes place in September, friends and families gather at large outdoor tables to eat, drink, dance and celebrate friendship. There’s music, traditional costumes, cold draft beer and lots of fun. If you’re cycling around the circuit during this time, get ready to make new friends and have fun like a local!

All of this is part of the same identity: religious history and German culture go hand in hand and transform the city into a place full of charm. The influences are in the family names, the recipes, the customs and even the architecture: there are several half-timbered houses, those with exposed wood that look like they came out of a movie.

Special stops along the way

Along the route, you can stop at small shops, cafes and even craft shops. The locals are always friendly and love to tell stories and interesting facts about the place. In our site, you can see who our supporters are, and each of them is ready to welcome you with open arms, with lots of good stories to share. These moments make cycling even more enjoyable and authentic.

A walk through history: Troops' Path

If you like cycling and also enjoy a good dose of history, the Caminho das Tropas is a place you will love to visit. It is on the circuit route (section 1) and is one of the most interesting sections. It was along this route that cattle drivers took their cattle from the South to the Southeast of Brazil, back in the 18th century.

Part of the trail still has the original rough stones, laid by slave hands. Walking or cycling along it is almost like going back in time. Along the same path, you will find Pedra das Letras, with ancient and mysterious inscriptions, and, further on, the beautiful Cachoeira do Salto — perfect for a refreshing stop and some photos.
